LLC name search: how to check a name is free in New Mexico
Last verified: 4 min read

An LLC name search tells you whether the name you want is already on the State's records. In New Mexico (NM), a U.S. state, you search the Secretary of State's business records, then the State confirms availability when it reviews your filing. With EXNNA you give us your name and two backups, and we file the first one the State accepts, so a taken name never stalls your order.
Where do you run an LLC name search in New Mexico?
On the Secretary of State's SOS Enterprise portal, at enterprise.sos.nm.gov, the system that holds New Mexico's business filings and its public business search. Search for:
- The exact name you want, without the ending ("Example Labs", not "Example Labs LLC").
- Close variations: plural and singular, with and without "The", common misspellings.
- The core word alone, to see how crowded it is.
If an active company already uses your name or something very close, pick another before you order.
What does a New Mexico LLC name have to include?
One of the endings the law accepts (NMSA 1978 § 53-19-3): "limited liability company", "limited company", "LLC", "L.L.C.", "LC" or "L.C.". "Limited" may be written "Ltd." and "Company" "Co.". The full list, with examples, is in New Mexico LLC name rules.
We also don't accept endings that belong to other kinds of companies, like "Inc.", "Corp.", "LP", "LLP", "PLLC", "P.C." or "PBC", and the name can use letters, numbers, spaces and & , . - ' ! ?.
Which words need approval first?
| Word in the name | What it takes |
|---|---|
| Bank, banking | Letter of no objection from NM's Financial Institutions Division |
| Insurance, trust company | The required regulatory approval first |
| A government agency or a licensed profession | Avoid unless you hold the approval or license |
Availability and approval are decided by the State and the relevant regulators.
Does a clear LLC name search guarantee the name?
No. A search shows what's on the record today; the State decides when it reviews your Articles of Organization, the filing that creates the company. Two ways to stay safe:
- Give two backups. If the first name can't be used, we move straight to the next one. No back-and-forth.
- Reserve the name. With EXNNA it's $40 on your order, the $20 State fee included, and the State holds it for 120 days.
Is the company name public?
Yes, the company name is on the record and anyone can search it. The owners aren't: New Mexico's Articles don't have to list members or managers, and EXNNA signs as organizer. Comparing states? Other states search names the same way, but their yearly costs differ; see New Mexico vs Texas LLC.
What comes after the LLC name search?
- Enter your name, two backups, the number of members and an email. No ID documents are needed.
- Sign the service agreement online.
- Pay the total in U.S. dollars or your local currency, where available, by card, online.
- The State usually approves in 1–3 business days. Here's how long it takes to form an LLC.
